How to get out of FB?

I registered a while ago to see some pictures of a friend. I had no intention of staying on and completely forgot about it. Now I recieve email very often, telling me that people are waiting for me to add them to my friends list. When I checked the mail, I do actually know all the people who want to "be my friend" is it just FB that finds people in the area and directs them to me or 1 found me and passed mwe on to their friends?
How do they know I am on it in the first place (not used my full name)
Now I would like to de-register, I do I proceed?(especially if I do not remember my password?)

FB works as a network. Either these people are friends of the friend who's pictures you wanted to look at, or they are people you email, who happen to be on FB.

Not sure how you de-register. Are you completely against FB?

I would imagine you first need to reclaim your password. There is, apparently, the option to delete your account.

I cannot say completely against but not overly keen on either. I suppose I could just not get on it at all but what prompted my request is that some of the people who want me to add them as friends are friends of my DD (10yo) and it does make me uncomfortable for some reason.

G - I registered last year in the same circs as you. I also have 2 friends who are actually those of my DS, also 10. They asked me to be their friends, there's no way I would have asked them IYSWIM. It has worked out quite nicely- they show me pictures of lego models and we are neighbours on Farmville. My boys have not got their own accounts and seem happy for it to stay that way.

Sorry SoupDragon, where is the option to delete the account? I have resseted my password and lookes into "account settings" but cannot find a "delete account".

Bottom of settings page - 'deactivate account'.

Thank you exexpat!

Done
