OK I have asked for help in the extracurricular section in the education section and there no response did not realis there is athread for geeky stuff.
My current music system is a sony which I got for 50 pounds and Our Tv is 15 years old ( so you get the picture)
I want something where I can download background music from the internet and can sing the song with the mike .I saw someone attaching their ipod( we dont have one) to their laptop(we have this) and singing to it in oneofthe get to gethers in our friends house.I was very embarrased to ask them as I am terrible with technoloy and would not have understood DD loves singing and would really enjoy it. She did not have any birthday party this year. She always goes to others house plays things like Wii etc., So it will be for her birthday as a present and I am willing to spend upto 200 pounds for it.The tunes I want to download is maily foreign or classical music. Some one suggested karoake machine- but I dont think the music I am thinking about and she enjoys singing will be available in it.

Do I make sense? Thanks for any advice and apologise for the long post.

You do make sense, but I don't have an answer, sorry. Why not follow up the friends and ask them to e-mail you with the bits of hardware and software they have used...

While an iPod is quite a cost, it might be that whatever they are using would also work with an iPod Nano, or some other MP3 player (if it is only being used to output music and then, armed with more info about what they are actually using, hopefully someone on MN will come up with suggestions or the items to fit within your budget.

If you can find the music you are interested in (ie just the background, without a singer on) then almost any speaker system would allow you to play it loud enough... Next question is whether you would want words displayed on (laptop) screen, and whether you want the voice (mic input) to also be amplified, like a proper karaoke system (and here I'm completely clueless, never having stepped into a bar or club with one!)

Just typed online karaoke into google and loads of results.

home.luckyvoice.com/ looks good. All you need is a microphone by the looks of things.
