Geeky stuff

So there's a big fat security hole in Internet Explorer (all versions) and the German government wants us all to use alternative browsers so that the Web doesn't end...

I have just downloaded Opera (been meaning to for ages), does anyone know how to get my Favourites list from IE into Opera without adding them one by one? Opera seems to store favrourites in a proprietary data file.

Thats funny, clicked on here then realised you are the one who has been giving me advice on the bavaria thread!

I have got Mozilla firefox and the bookmarks (favourites) has a bookmark "from internet explorer" and it shows you your favourites in IE.

Not sure about opera tho, sorry!

nighbynight · 16/01/2010 21:47

hi! yes, I remember that on firefox. Maybe I will change again to firefox.
Am using Opera now, and enjoying it, apart from the favourites thing.

I think Opera directly imports IE Favourites now. Try: File, Import and Export

Also have a play with Panel see here to sort bookmarks.

I use OperaMini so that's quite a bit different to main Opera. OperaMini is great on my mobile.

Thanks for this, Nighby. Will get DH to use Firefox now too.

thanks NN! it worked.

Have switched to Firefox now, because too many sites don't support Opera, or are a bit flakey.
Lets just say I am kicking myself for not changing earlier.

But FF is so popular now, I worry a bit about exploits against it. Will just have to rely on the OS team.

Changing from Internet Explorer, I mean. Performance is fine with Opera.

I always use Firefox or firefox derivatives.

If you're using windows & a website doesn't like FF, you can always install the add-on IE-Tab. THis runs IE in a tab in FF!

I find firefox well built & fast (just how I like them! :D ).

ImSoNotTelling · 17/01/2010 10:08

I use firefox too it's great

In my not particularly technical opinion they should just scrap Internet Explorer and start again anyway.

It's a nightmare to make web pages for (it has its own little quirky ways of displaying things, for those not familiar with its 'joys') and is generally so badly behaved it doesn't deserve world domination.

I use Firefox, Safari and Chrome on my PC laptop (all free to download). If a site isn't behaving well I just load it on another browser. (Riven, maybe try that with Facebook?).

nymphadora · 17/01/2010 11:40

Do you have to delet IE to get one of the others? Or can you have both? I am not good at changing to new systems & would like the option to change back
