Hello, really depressed this weekend as just forked out for a macbook pro and have been really excited but found that when it hibernates by itself, it basically crashes and you have to completely restart the computer doing a forced off first, then alt + power to turn it on again. i read up on the mac website and other people have had this problem too. i feel really cheated.

i suppose the way round it is to turn off the auto-sleep mode and just close the lid each time i walk away from it, but that's not the point. i want it to hibernate automatically. can't believe there is this problem with it and it's a brand new machine.

does anyone else have this problem with theirs? apparently it happens on 13", 15" and 17" pros. I am wondering whether to return my computer and ask for a new one, hoping the same fault will not occur.

Any ideas??

thanks for posting that - we've been wondering about getting a new mac (I'm still on the ibook G4 here - very elderly!) - not good if it's a common fault.

I would ask for a new computer, if I were you, given how new it is. I can't see how it would get better. Mac are normally good about that sort of thing, like when there was the faulty battery in the power pack and they just sent us all new ones (happily, ours was fine anyway, so we just got a nice new power pack!)

thanks stickylittlefingers. think i will call them first thing tomorrow.

i used to have an ibook g4 which i loved (but got stolen [] so decided to go for the new equivalent after much deliberation about switching to PC, and it's so great, apart from this little hitch. i definitely feel ripped off.

i'll speak to them tomorrow and hope they do the decent thing.

I hope so too. I love macs - even the odd hitch is NOTHING to what pc users have to put up with. I brought my work laptop home to work during these snow days, and god it's horrible! Slow and clanky and noisy and so... inelegant!

If I had a lovely new Mac I could run bootcamp and then also use it for work, but while I'm listening to our conservatory turn slowly into a swimming pool (it's had an ice flow over the floor the last few days) I think I know what I need to spend the next couple of thousand pounds I find wodged down the sofa on!

you poor thing with the conservatory!

oh well, let's hope you find the spare cash
