No internet on new iphone - any ideas?

Got lovely shiny iphone 3GS on Thursday (monthly contract with Orange). It's fab in every way except for the fact that I can't get ANY internet on it - wifi or cellular.

According to the tech people at Orange I amn't getting any cellular connection because one of the two masts in my area is out of action - but even when I am out and about and the phone is showing five bars at the top left of the home screen I can't connect to the internet - the connections just time out. The first guy I spoke to at Orange made me restore my phone but it hasn't made any odds except to delete all my contacts.... (any tips on how to save contacts from OLD phone before contract expires on Monday also appreciated!)

Wifi: We don't have wifi at home so wasn't surprised at not being able to pick anything up so went to local internet cafe to try and log onto btopenzone with the password I was given by Orange. Spent two hours forking out for endless coffees while going in circles on the bitopenzone site - entering passwords on their main log in page which directed me to the section for orange customers where I duly entered password and was directed back to the main log-in page to enter in password and on, and on and on.

What am I doing wrong? It's driving me NUTS.

Anyone? Pleeeease. I can't bear to phone Orange again - I feel like a stalker.

Are you on a contract or pay and go?
On my iPhone (p&g) I couldn't get online until I'd changed the cellular data settings (Settings-General-Network-Cellular data Network) I'm on o2, so I had to change it to payandgo.o2.co.uk (Annoyingly I have to do this again every time there's a major software update, as it reverts to the default setting) If this is the problem, I'm afraid you may have to speak to Orange again to find out what your settings need to be (sorry) - though as you presumably do have internet access on another machine, you may be able to find the details on the orange website.

Thanks RustyBear. I'm on contract. Curiously I don't seem to have any 'cellular data settings' on the phone. The first Orange Guy I spoke to identified this as the problem which is why I did the restore but after the resore/reset the cellular settings still didn't come up on the screen (it just lists 'enable 3g' then 'data roaming' and 'thethering' - nothing about cellular settings). When I called Orange again the woman I spoke to told me that the absence of a 'cellular settings' option meant that the settings were correct so wouldn't appear. I admit I'm a technophobe but even I was a bit at that.

I do have internet access on the PC but I'm not really finding any useful info on the orange website.

Can you connect via a wireless network?
If you can that suggests it is the cellular set up bit that is the issue

Settings
General
General
Network

The following are switched on:
Enable 3G
Data Roaming

If you click on Cellular Data Network what comes up under your settings?

purplehat · 09/01/2010 21:20

Ah, sorry just read that last bit about you not having any cellular data network settings. That sounds very strange to me.

zippy539 · 09/01/2010 21:23

Thanks Purplehat - it sounds odd to me too - though frankly I know sod all about these things - didn't even know what a cellular network was until this morning!!

Well, my settings are correct & they still appear! But this page suggests that it's up to the carrier whether you can see them or not, so maybe Orange don't allow it.

I'm afraid I can't suggest anything else other than going back to Orange & asking them to check your account is set up properly.

zippy539 · 09/01/2010 21:36

Thanks Rusty - the explanation seemed completely barking to me too! I will check out your link so thanks for that.

Has anyone else had similar problems. Orange have told me that this is only an issue since January 4th? (Without actually telling me what the issue is...)
