Blardy hell - our telly just blew up (literally) tonight... So what kind do we buy?

It was like bonfire night - sparks, bangs, smoke, the lot... It was over 10 years old so now we're telly-less, which means we'll all be going bonkers well before 12pm tomorrow...

Any advice on what I can buy? Budget = about £250 as this seems the least I can get away with paying having looked on a few websites? I have no clue about HD/LCD - have done some googling but am not sure about things like resolution ratio - is 800:1 rubbish - I've seen some that are 8000:1. I think we'd get something like a 26" one - our old one was 20" so this would probably seem bigger without being too huge??

Or is it all a load of nonsense and it doesn't matter what I get??

Help please!!

My CRT tele smoked a while ago... I got an LCD to replace it. I don't have Sky+ or fancy things like that, so just went for something low cost with integrated freeview.

Big difference between old tv and a LCD one is the Depth. Even a large LCD will take up less physical room, depth wise, than the CRT tele.

When it comes to screens, my step-brother who research this sort of thing before getting a tv, said that Samsung screens are good in terms of picture quality vs cost.

I would say get one that says HD Ready on it, just so that in future you can connect up a HD Source should you ever get one.

I've got a telly you can have if your are in SE or arrange a courier - its Toshiba I think, a big screen, old style hmmm but thinking about it not sure if it would need modifying for digital switchover. Not sure where you are but like I say, you can have it if you wish

Awww - thanks Skymoo that's really kind - but I'm in Manchester so not very handy!

Thanks NannyNick - will have a look at Samsung.

Why do these things always happen at precisely the wrong times...? Our computer is dying and dp does some typing work so needs one that doesn't crash every few minutes - so we'd just arranged to borrow some money from her parents to get a new one in the next couple of weeks - and then the telly blew up! (probably jealous...).

Ho hum - ds's are going bonkers, even though we had a brainwave and put our little portable downstairs so at least they have something to stare at . Still, it'll Do Them Good!

Get it from John Lewis, their guarantees are the best

No worries, one of these days I will get around to putting it on freegle!

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 04/01/2010 11:37

Get another telly from Freegle. People are always trying to get rid of telly's after upgrading to some fancy modern plasma telly.
