Good basic free photo editing software?

Does anyone know a photo editing programme as above?

I want to basically enhance the foreground/background of photos (contrast, brightness etc) and need a good red eye removal tool.

Thanks in advance...

Picassa is meant to be pretty good, but I am a Photoshop girl myself.

picassa does the basics well and will organise all your photos

You can do most things using GIMP. It's basically Photoshop, but for free and developed by the open source geeks...

Great thanks, I'll give them both a whirl and see which I get on with!

I think the GIMP is best, and it has a LOT of functions available to you from the menus.

If you want a really simple one & not to alter the images too much, try XNVIEW which is free for home use. (Windows only). This lets you adjust the image but not paint over it or write on it.

Thanks for the info, I will look into GIMP

Love Picasa thank you, Gimp was a bit too technical!

Also love the fact that Picasa has some sort of face recognition organisation tool, played with it for ages
