Wireless Network Security

I have a main pc connected to a wireless router via an ethernet. I now have a laptop I've set up to connect to the router wirelessly with a WAP setting. I've gone on to my network supplier page and changed the password, will this stop hackers accessing my wireless connection?

As long as you've set a network key and when you look at "connect to a network" it should say "secured"

Sorry, I'm a bit thick. I don't know if I've set a network key and where do I see 'connect to networ'. I'm on Vista. I'm set it as WAP and put my router number (on the bottom) in - is that a network key

Found the connet to a network - yes I have set a network key, however it just says 'connected' not 'secured'. A strange thing just happened to there was another network showing 'belkin' which was showing as 'unsecured' is this another wireless its picking up?

you can also hide your network by unticking the broadcast ssid. Your laptop will find it but your neighbours won't 'see' it. There are loads of networks around here. Most of the neigbours have them secure but visible and one is unsecured.

have you got a ninetendo ds? or wii or ps3? you could use one of those to look to see if they can get on your network now. That'll tell you for sure if it is secure or not.

how do i untick the broadcast SSID. Yes I have a DS and Wii - how do I test it.

Sorry, said I was thick

no you arent at all, if you don't do this stuff then how are you going to know how to do it? I#m like this with mible phones.

With a belkin I think if you put:
192.168.2.1
into where you normally type web addresses then you get access to all the router controls.
On mine then I choose 'channel and ssid' and under that theres a 'broadcast ssid' box.

On the nintendo go to the set up screen. then tap wifi connection settings, tap on connection then 'search for access point. that will show you which networks are around. see if you can connect to yours or not.

ok, don't worry. What have you used to set the password? (not sure if you have extra software that you are using)

SingleMum01 · 27/12/2009 14:23
