I have a conventional keyboard, but am sure there must be a way of typing accented letters.. I just don't know it yet!

Thank you in advance

Hiya

I hope you have a PC becuase if it's a MAC I don't know.

In Word, you go into the "Insert" bit on the toolbar, click on "symbol" and some options should come up, including lots of letters with accents etc.

Good luck

for é - hold down Alt Gr and press 'e'

for others if you have full keyboard (my laptop only has numbers above), put number lock on and hold down ALT (not alt gr) and type:

130 for é
133 for 'a' accent grave
160 for 'a' accent acute (eg Spanish)
161 for 'i' Spanish accent
162 for 'o' spanish
163 for 'u' spanish
135 for 'c' cedilla
139 for 'e' accent grave

others are between 130-150 but I can't remember them off the top of my head

I can't test them at the moment either as don't have full keyboard sorry - hope this helps anyway and someone else might know better. alternatively go to nsert symbols

Probably easier to buy a new keyboard...

stickylittlefingers · 03/12/2009 13:47

yup, I sat down one day and went through 100-200 of what happens when you press alt+number. Lots of useful symbols! I use the German ones a lot when I'm not on my German laptop.

Thank you, but I can't seem to get it to work with the alt followed by the numbers... Grrrrr!!!

What am I doing wrong?

Oh, it's because my numbers are at the top isn't it? As opposed to on the right hand side.

Don't growl too loud - I just tried one of those combinations and the browser choked (flew off to another tab, and I've not seen that happen in a while).

Do remember such combinations working within MS-DOS rather than within Windows, but not on my own PC, so maybe something else is kicking in!

PS Hope you achieve what you want...
