I'm with Orange and get 30 free texts from the website a month for each registered mobile, which is much easier than phone-texting for an ancient old crone like me, but since you are limited to 140 chrs and I need to pack lots into each one, I soon found myself ritn msgs lyk dis1 2save rm

...even though I swore I never would.

Someone recently posted that if you register on the O2 website they also allow free text messages (even for non-customers of O2).

Have not yet tried it, but that's because I've a couple of Orange numbers and can use those for free when near a PC, and Asda PAYG only charges 4p per text so when I'm out, I use that quite cheaply.

(and despite the limitations, I rarely if ever abbreviate words, just choose shorter ones for a text!)

If it's of interest to anyone, ClickATell.co.uk provide a Web to SMS Gateway. Message credits cost around £40 per 1000.

Not quite what you want Katy but may be of interest to someone finding this message thread in the future. Though if you want to send 1000's of SMS messages, then the ClickATell API is something that could be used.

Free SMS Gateways UK - a list of a few of the sites offering the service for Free, plus comments from users and warnings from users about some services to watch out for which end up costing you money. When using any Free SMS service, make sure you read the fine print.

Katy, if your mobile phone plugs into your computer (or connects via BlueTooth) then you may have an application on the CD that came with your phone to let you send SMS messages from your computer using your own mobile phone (so at your usual text message rate).

This is all great - but I went out & had to text properly anyway

Thanks everyone
