My brain is spinning with 'generations' and 'GBs'!

Is the latest model '3rd Generation'?

Are the only differences between 8GB and 32GB just the amount of memory and that the 32GB can be voice activated?

There are re-furbished ones on the Apple website but these are 2nd Generation. How do these differ?

Thankyou to antone who has any answers!

The latest version is the 3rd Generation, it's available only in 16gb and 32gb.

And 8gb one might be either the 1st or 2nd Generation.

The 1st and 2nd aren't that different. The 2nd has a sleeker case (the same as the 3rd I believe), a speaker and longer battery life but I believe that that's about it.

The 3rd is a bigger change. As you say it can be voice activated but it's also got a faster processor inside, it's more powerful but the battery doesn't last quite as long because of that.

Does it matter that it's more powerful? Well in theory it can run games better than the older iPod Touches and iPhones. But there's such a large number of those older gadgets out there that I can't see that many people releasing things that only work on the new faster gadgets.

So I'd be reasonably happy getting the older 2nd Generation 8gb one. However do be aware that in theory you are buying something that is now out of date... I do have an older one myself and I'm not really too concerned at all.

Badgerpaws, that is very hepful. Thankyou.

Argos advertise an 8GB 3G. Does that mean it is 3rd generation, or does the 3G mean something else?!

Is there any way of telling from the spec of this one on the Apple website what generation it is?

God, I sound like my mother who goes all vague when asked to buy something 'technical' i.e. anything that requires batteries

A few other sites also refer to the 8gb as a "3G" model.

Apple themselves clearly break the 8gb model away from the paired up 32gb and 64gb on their web site. However they do seem somewhat shy about mentioning that those bigger models have more powerful innards.

Regardless of what online shops seem to be claiming the 8gb model does seem to be the same as it was when it was known as the "2G".

That refurbished one looks like a first generation model. It doesn't seem to have the volume buttons on it's side and the aerial panel is more square rather than the more rounded one introduced with the 2G model.

Thankyou so much badgerspaws.

I've taken the plunge and ordered one now. I went for a 32GB in the end. Decided to stick with the newer version. I've just got to keep it hidden from ds now until christmas (although might have to test it out a bit when he is at school - just to download some games, of course)

What a relief to have made a decision
