Laptop battery not charging.

Laptop is plugged in but it says not charging and there's only 9% available. How do I get it to charge?

have you checked the fuse?

If it's not the fuse, first make sure all the connections to & from the transformer (the brick- like bit) are firmly connected.

If so then probably either the charger isn't working or the. socket where it plugs in to the laptop may be broken. If you know anyone with the same/ similar laptop you could borrow their charger, or maybe your local computer shop might be able to check it - the charger connection has to be compatible and the voltage & amperage should be the same - it's marked on the transformer; it'll say something like 19v 6.3A.

If it's the connection inside the computer it'll have to be resoldered, which can be a bit expensive & often isn't covered by the guarantee, unless you have accident cover.

( Just a gentle note that it might be significantly lower than 6.3A - many items have 5A or even 3A fuses these days !)

I didn't mean the plug fuse webdude, I meant the transformer output, and the figures I gave were just an example of the kind of thing to look for. I do think the output on chargers is rising though - the first laptops we had at school were only 3.19 then we had some at 3.42, and on the later more powerful laptops several are over 4.0. The example I gave was from DS's 3Gb Toshiba - my 2Gb Tosh is only 3.95.
Using a charger with an output that's too high may damage the laptop while one that's too low may not charge it properly, or at all.

Do you have Vista? This is (IIRC) a known bug feature that happens very occasionally. It happened to me once in January.

I think that the correct way to sort it is to unplug from mains, reboot, and then plug in again. But you need to do that while you still have enough battery power to do it.

I've sorted it...took the battery out, blew on it & put it back in.

RustyBat - OK - must say I'm out of touch with modern laptops, and didn't have a PSU handy to compare with (3 older laptops at home, but was using a friend's PC at the time).

As for having a machine (let alone a laptop) with 2GB or 3GB of RAM, well, they're only on my shopping list
