Where have my iphone ringtones gone?

Help. I have a new iphone and changed the ringtone, to one on the original list and now I get nothing when it rings. I have tried on settings to change silent vibrate on then off and ring vibrate on and off still I can't get a ringtone. Am I being really stupid?

...I don't suppose the little silver silent switch has accidentally been flipped so as to show the red dot?

I can't see a red dot? What does the red dot mean?

There's a switch on the side (top left) which turns the ringer on & off, when it's off a red dot shows. The volume control is just below, the top half turns it up, the bottom half down
