Can I use AVG to scan an external hard drive?

It is a paid for & up-to-date AVG

Well I don't have AVG on this PC in front of me, but you should be able to right click the drive in My Computer and select 'Scan with AVG' or similar.

Also in the options somewhere there will be a box to tick to 'scan removable drives'

oh and in the bit for scheduled checks you should be able to select it there as one of the drives to check.
