First empty the recycle bin.

Then go to control Panel - internet options and you will see a 'temporary internet files' section with a button to delete files. Since they are temp files anyway that's safe enough.

You will now probably need to empty the recycle bin again.

There are some other temp files you can delete.

Inside C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Temp

the 'local settings' folder may be hidden but it will be there. Also typing %temp% into the address bar will get you there.

Do NOT delete anything inside C:\Windows or C:\Program Files manually.

See if the above helps and post again.

Most of 'your' files are inside 'My Documents' and the biggest user of space is probably photos from a camera. There are ways to make images use less hard drive space without ruining them. Also you might want to make collections of them, put them on DVD and then remove them from the laptop.
