Anyone else who has a house with very slow internet connection and mobile reception?

Cant watch iplayer, youtube etc on internet in my house despite changing provider to sky and paying for faster connection. Sky and provider before say nothing to do with them. Also have terrible mobile phone reception so have to walk round the garden for ages to get a couple of bars.

DH and I have different phone suppliers who both say reception for our postcode is good so must be our house.

speed of router is 100 mbs. Gawd, no idea what this all means.

Changing channel on router was a massive improvement to our wireless internet, if you have a BT homehub I can dig out exactly the advice I followed (I hope) as it was a Yahoo! answer. Channel default was 1 or 3 I think and now we are using Channel 11. Our area is also rubbish for mobile reception with Orange but my work phone is an O2 Blackberry and that is fine so I think network can make a difference, too.

Tesco mobile is fine for ds and I was told why once but cant remember. They do something differently.

speed of router figure you have there is the speed of data between the router and the computer. Ignore that measurement. You want to know the ASDL (may be called WAN) connection speed, that is the speed the router is getting between the ISP and itself.

0.32mbps is quite slow... not really good enough for video streaming.

It's not the amount you pay for... it's the amount the line will provide. Paying for more speed does not improve the line.

As you say you are paying for UP TO 8 mbps, then I suspect you are on ASDL Max - Check Exchange
As it is the ADSL Max product, the connection speed will vary... mine has improved greatly this month for some reason (was getting 0.6mbps, tested today at 1.7mbps).

What exchange are you on? How far do you reckon you are from the exchange?

herc, that is v slow if you are in London. Yes, check with your neighbours because that doesn't sound right imo.

Tesco Mobile use the O2 network (I believe) as its backbone so maybe their signal just better where you are?

Tesco Mobile appears to be O2 See Press Release

You can view Mobile Base Stations using Ofcom: SiteFinder thus get a feel for how near to a base station you live.

hercules1 - that sounds incredibly slow for London. Something weird there. You may need the BT engineer to check the physical line too.
