I have never has to 'logon' with passwords for my e-mail account and all of a sudden today, it asks me to 'Please verify both username and password are correct for your mail server.' What's that then and how do I find out what my username and password is?

Thankyou oh wise ones!

Who is your mail provider?

MaureenMLove · 18/05/2009 22:12

POP3.ntlworld.com? Does that sound right?

your username is likely to be the first part of your e-mail address. e.g. [email protected] username likely to be fredbloggs Do you have any regularly used passwords?

It sounds a bit iffy to me tbh. Could someone else have logged you out?

MaureenMLove · 18/05/2009 22:24

Well, I do yes, but I've tried both of them and neither of them are working. I've even found a page in 'properties' which shows my password as having 5 digits, which would fit with a particular password, but it's not working.

Nope. I opened e-mail when I got in from work, switched of the pc half an hour later and I was the first one back in and suddenly it doesn't work. My PC is password protected and neither DD or DH know it, so they won't have been able to switch it on at all.

hhhm - you might need to ring the internet company and check if they can reset it.

MaureenMLove · 18/05/2009 22:30

OK, thanks. Is it worth doing a re-boot to last night or something, in case I have done something that may have effected it? (I know nothing about these things, so that may be a stupid thing to suggest!)

I don't think that will have any effect as login is a provider controlled thing so if it's logged off then going back won't make it log back on.

It's also possible that you are using the right username/password, but that the server is having a problem. Sometimes an error suggesting you are using the wrong password may just mean the server didn't reply properly.

Does your ISP have a status page on their site that lists problems such as email servers?

MaureenMLove · 19/05/2009 15:53

I'm back on! I think I know what may have caused the problem.

I decided that I didn't really need the password protector on, to actually switch the machine on, so I took it off. It was after that, that I couldn't logon to my e-mails. DH is home tonight and has given me the password details for e-mail and hey presto, I'm in!

Of course, this could have nothing to do with it, but it makes sense to me!

Thanks for your time!
