I can't recommend... but I have been looking into it. I had the same idea for my DH birthday present. I am thinking of getting him the Garmin Forerunner 405. But this is mainly for running and the GPS aspect I think is just to track how far you've gone, so maybe no good for actually finding your way around. So it depends what you want it for.
Have a look at this recent article from the Telegraph which reviews 5 different hand held GPS and also an older article from the Times

What will he use it for? The 3 main uses are road navigation, off-road navigation/walking/cycling and marine - different products have evolved for each application.

will be used primarily for walking.. thanks

The Garmin Colorado 300 seems particularly appropriate!

I haven't used this one (I use GPS for sailing) but Garmin have always had the edge over rivals Magellan and Lowrance IMHO, so that would be the one I would look at first.

thanks - I was trying to work out the difference between colorado and oregon any ideas? (but the fact that the garmin have os seemed an advantage).

Oregon is touchscreen, Colorado has keys and the cheesily named "Rock 'n Roller" (sic).

I don't think I would get on with touchscreen in an outdoor GPS (fine for the car, useless in a boat), but this is down to personal preference.
