I have done a disk clean-up & run my virus program

But each age is taking forever to load

Can I tweak anything else?

do you mean you have defragged?

also have a look at what programmes you have installed that are not used and using up space, and get rid

KatyMac · 28/04/2009 22:28

Disk is 3/4 empty

Haven't defrag as it says it doesn't need to (should I any way?)

wont do any harm

do you have 2 anti virus programmes running?

they can often slow it down if they are both fighting to cscan

KatyMac · 28/04/2009 22:32

Don't think so I run AVG once a day & I am not aware of any others

Do you have Windows Defender running. Others have complained it slows things down too much.

weebump · 28/04/2009 22:36

Are you on a mac KatyMac?

onagar · 28/04/2009 22:37

Btw, if you press CTRL-ALT-DEL you will see the Task Manager and can see which things are using the most CPU time.

(you can also get it by right clicking the taskbar)

The 'Process' tab will have a column called CPU and if you're doing nothing then 'System Idle Process' should be the highest figure.

fuzzywuzzy · 28/04/2009 22:42

are you on a PC? Do you use MS office? are all your updates done?

KatyMac · 28/04/2009 22:44

Laptop

No updates outstanding (as far as I know)

Tsk Manager says only firefox & defrag going on atm using about 10%

OP posts:
KatyMac · 28/04/2009 22:45

System idle is between 90 & 93

That sounds about right then. Is the computer slow to do things like open a folder or is it just the internet?

KatyMac · 28/04/2009 22:50

It's a bit slow for files (word & excell)

But for the HMRC disk or the olympus package it's really quite slow to open

It just seems odd

OP posts:
KatyMac · 28/04/2009 23:09

Well the defrag seems to have worked I wonder why it said it didn't need one

OP posts:
lou33 · 29/04/2009 15:23

glad it improved

KatyMac · 29/04/2009 16:49

Thanks everyone for your help it has been a bit happier today & certainly speedier
