Try GIMP

I have Gimp but when you save the pic as a jpeg the resolution becomes rubbish, it's all pixelated which it isn't as a Gimp file. Unless I am doing something really wrong....which is possible!!

what's the high res image going to be used for? Could saving as a gif work?

It's going to be used for a magazine, it's a free local magazine and they have said they need an A5 size jpeg in hi res

I've never used GIMP, but I know a lot of people who do.

I use Photoshop, but that costs a fortune!

Sorry I can't be more help!

I also use photoshop, could you download a trail for free do you think? When you are saving as a jpg are you making sure that it's not switching it to low res?

bnp would def save high res but would be a massive file size.
