How do I safely dispose of an old laptop?

It is falling apart and shuts down without warning. I'd be happy just to chuck it but it has all my documents on it - with bank stuff and other sensitive information on. So, how do I get rid of it and know my data is safe?

I think you can remove the hard drive on most laptops. Have a google with the model number.

Safest way to dispose of your info is to take said hard drive and smash it to smithereens with a hammer (Other heavy objects are available).

Most local tips have facilities to drop off broken electrical items, or you could freecycle it for spares.

Thanks elfin - I will try to retrieve the hard drive then freecycle.
