Crap crap crap - dd has changed the orientation of the whole screen on DH's laptop - how do I change it back?

Not even this old lap top, but his good work one that I am not allowed to touch!!

She started banging away on the keys while I was MNing busy and now the whole screen is the wrong way round, with the start tool bar etc over on the far right. I know you can change the location of the toolbar but it's not just that, all the icons are side on now too, ie the whole screen is "portrait" rather than "landscape"!

PLEASE help, he's due home in about 1/2 an hour!!

You're about the sixth person to ask this so far this year on Mumsnet - if you search the archives you'll find all the others.

I usually bash the keys in a similar sort of fashion as DD, and get it eventually.

I think we need this permanently fixed to the top of the Geeky stuff topic.

wmmc has the answer - to stop it happening again, right click on the desktop & choose Graphics Options-Hot Keys-Disable

It's very common, as toddlers tend to bang one chubby little paw down on each side of the space bar, one falling neatly on Ctrl & Alt & the other on the arrow keys.

At the junior school where I work it's more often the result of kids trying to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to unfreeze the computer & getting it wrong.

whomovedmychocolate you would be laughing even more if you could have seen me kneeling in front of it, head to one side, trying to work out how to use the mouse pad thing - you had to move your finger up to make the cursor go down etc...I never even knew you could do such a thing! Why would anyone want their laptop screen all upside down anyway?! Phew, i can relax and eat my creme egg now! . I can just imagine DHs face if he'd come home to an upside down laptop...

Goodness I had no idea it was such a common thing! Yip, a sticky would be good, I didn't even search as I thought dd had invented something entirely new!

It does actually have a use - my sister has a monitor which can be turned to portrait orientation, which makes it easier to work with long documents (she's a professional translator) - you just use the hotkeys to turn the display round.

4444 is the extension for the IT help desk at many offices I've worked in. Sorry - nothing of great interest.

Aaaa thought it was a magic number you could call and IT people would help you out! That should exist actually!

This has happened loads of times when my children are on the pc. I don't know if this would work for everyone, but on our pc, you just click on the bar (can't remember if it is a right or a left click but one works and the other doesn't) and sort of drag the mouse towards the bottom of the screen. Hey presto, bar moves.

That's what I thought it was at first DG but it wasn't just the bar, it was the whole screen, ie you had to tip your head to the side to see the icons etc properly! I've put it well out of her way today!
