How to chat with cam privately?

Not for dodgy purposes but DC would like to 'chat' to their Dad now that we have a computer with built in camera and I have NO idea how you do this.

I've never found skype all that good, the camera usually freezes a lot.

We use MSN/windows live messenger for the webcam bit,
and Google Talk for the talking bit.
