INstalling fonts on a PC (stupid person alert!)

OK I am used to Macs, which I understand, but having downloaded some fonts to my laptop I have no idea how to Make them Work. (The site they came from is one I have used for years so not frighened of malware or anything, just have no idea what the PC equivalent of a System FOlder is...)
Can I have a Moron's Guide to installing them please?

What version of Windows is it?

Usually it's Start, control panel, find the "fonts" folder, open it and then something like file, install new font in XP and older
and right click , install new font in Vista.
