Yes, I went wireless recently.
I take it you already have internet connection if you are on MN

You go to a shop (or on Amazon?) and buy a wireless router, which plugs into your internet connections and is a sort of box with a couple of aerials and some flashing lights. If your laptop is already wireless enabled, which it probably is if it's new, you don't need to also buy a usb thingy to stick in the back. Otherwise you do, but often you can get one with the router.

Then you just kind of follow the instructions and plug everything into each other and it sets itself up.

How expensive a router you need depends on how big your house is.

Hope that helps

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/02/2009 15:53

something like this but I expect you can get it cheaper.

couture1 · 13/02/2009 15:54

Thanks Kathy, I want it up and running today so will buy from the shop, do you know what brand is good or any to avoid? Can I get it in Argos?

Thanks again.

Yes you can get them in Argos (good old Argos). Mine is Belkin which is a well-known brand but to be honest I don't know which ones are best.

couture1 · 13/02/2009 15:57

Will I need anything else while im there?

op, tbh if you're a complete novice(and if you have the money) i would get someone in to do it for you, we tried to do it ourselves but failed...ended up getting someone in, only cost £45....probably cheaper now?....

not much help i know...good luck!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/02/2009 16:02

Not that I can think of. Let us know how it goes.

daftpunk · 13/02/2009 16:03

oh btw...we have 2 laptops so slightly more complicated?..you might be ok with sorting out one. [hopeful]

LoveMyLapTop · 13/02/2009 16:04

Isyour laptop wi-fi built in?
mine is

couture1 · 13/02/2009 20:27

I bought a NETGEAR as recommended by the man in the shop. All was going well with the installation or so I thought but now Im stuck!!

Keep getting a message from talk talk to put in a code in the address bar but after that nothings happening - how frustrating.

This is a useful page. Just a thought - until you've configured your router, you do need to connect it to your laptop with a cable - have you done that?

couture1 · 13/02/2009 21:23

I think I have sorted it now

But where does the ADSL wire go that is still in my laptop?

OP posts:
RustyBear · 13/02/2009 21:26

Once the router is configured you don't need the cable any more - you can connect wirelessly.

couture1 · 13/02/2009 21:31

Oh bloody hell - Its not worked then. Ive taken the wire out and it dis onnects.

RustyBear · 13/02/2009 21:36

Have you set a security password?
Is your wireless switch on? (I know that sounds obvious, but some are easy to turn off accidentally)

couture1 · 13/02/2009 22:00

I followed all the instructions and at the end of the programme it said it had been a success but obviously not

OP posts:
couture1 · 13/02/2009 22:43

All sorted now.

Well done!
Are you enjoying MNing in places you would never have previously thought possible?
