Need to buy satnav for France...

I believe it is illegal in France to have speed camera detectors. But don't all satnavs have these?

Can they be turned off?

Any recommendations/things to avoid?

Thanks

just posted this but it didn't come up in my Active Convos... What is going on?

dh says he thinks the sat navs are different as they don't actively seek out speed cameras but just show them on the map. we never had any problems using our sat nav in france. But he may be completely wrong. Never heard of it before!

thanks ruty that sounds more promising. I was imagining we'd have to go and seek out some extra special gadget (DH is already wetting himself with joy over the prospect of all the geeky research he can do)

actually last time we were in france our sat nav broke just as we approached the ferry. It brought dh out in a cold sweat and he was sure we wouldn't make it to our destination, despite numerous reminders that pre-5 years ago we relied on, you know, those sat navs that come without funny voices, er MAPS.

We had our normal sat nav and just downloaded the Spanish maps for when we went to Spain. DP didn't pay any attention to the speed camera signs and we never saw any cameras. However about a month after we came home I signed for something from the postman which was from Spain (we have an apartment there so this isn't unusual), but it was a speeding fine! A month later we got another one - DP had been caught speeding, TWICE by the same camera. When we went back out there we looked for the camera as the pictures showed us where we had been caught and low and behold there was a camera but unlike ours they are small grey boxes that are really low to the ground. Now he pays attention to the signs and the sat nav - and he still hasn't paid the fines so constantly jokes about being arrested everytime we step off the ferry/plane.

I think you are allowed the SatNavs where it tells you where speed camera's are located based on map data.

I think it is the RADAR detectors which are illegal....the ones that actually sense a signal emitted by the camera.
