ideas on software for making world maps?

Hi all. Was wondering if anyone could help me. I need to produce some high quality global maps with countries colour coded to show paticular attributes, and was wondering which software would be best. Have been recommended to use ArcGIS, but feel its a bit of a hammer to crack a walnut, and may have problems with printing etc. Have looked at smatdraw, but you don't seem to be able to actually find the names of countries on their global maps (which could lead to possible errors with some of the very small ones). Also I'd ideally like something that you could automatically download from a dataset (e.g. excel) rather than have to click on each country to change the colour. Any ideas?
Thanks so much.
