Does anyone know anything about mobile broadband? How much 'time' is 1GB? And can you upgrade 'in contract'?

I have just got a web book and a stick with a SIM. I don't know anything about mobile broadband but DH and I have worked out I have a 1GB limit - does anyone know how much 'time' this is? I stupidly thought it was something to do with storage space so got it. How much is 3GB? For £10 more a month I can have 3GB... I cannot see anything about how to get hold of vodaphone so I can upgrade. Does anyone know if you can upgrade? I really should have done my homework! Thanks

Oh, and to save starting another thread, how do I use the 'blue' options on my keypad? My left arrow has a 'home' written in blue under it - how can I use it to go 'home'? Thankyou

Found this which shoudl help

"What can I do with my Mobile Broadband download allowance?

It can be difficult to work out which mobile broadband package is right for you based on download allowances, but you can use this as a rough guide:

  • 1GB of mobile broadband data lets you send 650 plain text emails and surf the web for 30 hours and download 30 two minute videos and download 60 music tracks
  • 3GB of mobile broadband data lets you send 2,000 plain text emails and surf the web for 100 hours and download 100 two minute videos and download 200 music tracks
  • 7GB of mobile broadband data lets you send 4,500 plain text emails and surf the web for 200 hours and download 200 two minute videos and download 400 music tracks"

Have no idea about upgrading, can you just find any cust service no. for vodafone and ask them?

1Gb is the amount of data you can download in the time period. So lots of web surfing and emails would be fine. Downloading things like music or video will gobble it up very quickly.

'downloading' - does that mean viewing on youtube etc. also? I am not sure 1GB is going to support my MN habit!

'Downloading' would be all web based stuff

just browsing the web will use up your allowance, although viewing different sites I imagine will use different ammounts, if there are lots of pictures or videos running on the page for eg

boredveryverybored · 28/01/2009 13:53

Sooo, you have a limit of 1GB to download, everything you do online will be eating into that limit, some things more than others. So impossible to give an exact 'time' that you will get for your allowance. But if you spend it all just looking at MN I reckon you'll get a fair ammount

Do you have normal broadband at home? mobile broadband is really only for if you are out and about and need to use your laptop, is it pay as you go? or are you on a contract?

Oggsdog · 28/01/2009 13:59

Is there some sort of counter that you can download (eating into your limit ), that tells you how much of your allowance you've used?

I am currently thinging about changing provider, so I have downloaded (free) something called NetMeter that tracks how many kbs I am actually using. It records it daily, weekly and monthly.
I tried the guides on how much 1gb actually is, but the two I tried gave vastly differing answers, so I had no confidence in them - one predicted I would use 35gb a day, one said 0.2gb a day !

Netmeter seems to be really easy to understand.

NetMeter

Thanks - I was going to use it in place of laptop to mn in bed work on the go but seems I am best keeping my normal broadband also, as it costs £15 a GB if I go over - the price of my unlimited broadband! It's contract [wally]. It tells me my usage - seems I used 6mb in about an hour.
