I have to complete an excel report daily for work. On each spreadsheet, I have to 'enable the macros'. It annoys me that I have to do this each time and I am curious what it means?

You can probably avoid having to do that by adjusting the overall security level.

Roughly speaking Macros are little programs (scripts) that run to do small tasks. Since people found a way to make malicious ones like viruses it's not advisable to open strange documents with the security off. If it's always just your own docs though you probably could.
