Why can't I get an internet explorer to start up?

Agh! Popped into work here to ask.

When I try to start up my internet explorer at home, the icon flickers, the eggtimer appears for a few seconds and then disappears again, but nothing starts up.

BTbroadband is working OK, as I have managed to get our VPN working and remote connection to my work computer, but no internet (therefore no email nor MN) at home. Heeeeellllollpppp!

Would that be IE6 or IE7?

If you run Internet Options from the control panal you can Delete Files (that's just the temporary internet files so it's safe) and Delete Cookies which sometimes helps.

If you are using IE 7 you can try running IE without any add-ons to see if one of them is causing the problems.

Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If you have just installed any new toolbars or IE extras you can try uninstalling them from Control Panel - Add/Remove programs.

One common fault can be cured by going to Start and then the RUN box and typing

regsvr32.exe "c:\program files\internet explorer\ieproxy.dll"

Oh and run any antivirus software you might have.
