My computer has suddenly started showing video clips as sound only

I don't know exactly how to explain this without knowing what everything is called, but my computer hs suddenly started plaing all the video clips I have downloaded as .avi files with windows media player as sound files only (ie I can hear them but not see them). Probably something I have done, but what? And how do I change it back again??

In order to get mine to play AVIs I installed DivX from here. Perhaps you did too and it has become corrupted. Or perhaps something you have installed since has kind of taken over. Reinstalling DivX will most likely fix it, but I can't be certain.

Did it used to play them in Windows Media? Some people install the VLC Player instead. In which case it is simply that Windows Media has taken back over that filetype. If you normally use another player than Windows Media there is probably a settings page in your player that chooses filetypes like AVI etc You would untick AVIs in Windows media and tick them in your player

How do I get at these players to tick boxes? (extreme incompetence emoticon)

If you had another player installed then it will be on the Start Menu somewhere, but it could one of several. If you find one and post the name I may be able to help.

If the AVIs used to work in Windows Media then perhaps you don't need another player anyway. In that case I'd download and install the DivX program.

It's pretty quick and easy to install and will most likely solve the problem as Windows Media should use the codec it installs automatically. You shouldn't need to do anything else.

Thanks - I'll try that tonight! See what happens.

Installed your program, onager, and have just been watching my video clips again. Thank you! MN is a wonderful resource.
