I have been sent a GDS file that |I can't open, what software do I need (and by anychance is it free)?

It is a template for a 3D grand piano, which is for various craft mediums but I am (hoping)to adapt it to use for sugarpaste.

Could try KLayout - Assuming you are using MS Windows (eg WinXP) then try the file: klayout-0.16-win32-install.exe (see the linked page for the download link).
