Xbox Live - What's it all about?

My DH has bought an XBOX 360 for himself the family for Christmas.

The spotty youth in the shop was trying to get me to buy Xbox Live subscription but I didn't really understand what he was on about so declined.

Is it worth getting as a pressie for DH?

It's quite good. It allows you to be part of the online community, to add friends, play against them whilst talking to them either by messaging or live thru the headset. It also allows access to xbox system updates and game updates. Say you have a game and have completed it, xbox live gives you the option of downloading extra add-ons, levels or challenges. Usually the add-ons cost a few pounds but it's worth it, one add-on in particular adds 7 hours of game play to a game.

You can also download free game demos, movie and music trailers which is handy as you can try before you buy.

I'd say it's worth it. As far as I know, you can have a trial subscription which lets you try the live service for a month before committing to buy.

You don't need a subscription but it does let you have the full interactive experience.

DO NOT GO THERE FOR TEENAGERS!! DS 15 is obsessed and has spent every waking hour on his talking to his friends. I bought it for him as a present after a particularly good parent's eve and report - it has been downhill all the way since then. DS says it is wonderful though. You can get a few months or a year.

Sherbert thanks, but my DTs are only 5 so I've got some time before I need to worry about them being online chatting to friends all day.

HolyGuacamole - The Xbox isn't 'coming' till Christmas Day so I can't really use the trial subscription beforehand. I might give it a miss, I'm not sure he's that much of a techno geek. (no offence to your DH!)
