Second Life - I don't get it

I've signed up and I have a character who is standing there wondering what to do. I just don't get what I'm meant to do.

I signed up a while ago. Wandered round for a bit. Got chatted to by a man with a strange name who told me there was so much to do and so much fun to have . Then I wandered around a bit more and found noone and nothing to do. Just got a warning that I was walking on owned private land. Haven't been in again.

I think I wandered around a bit then came across something to read that told me how to leave.

or maybe I thought I'd left but actually didnt and that was why it was so boring!

Ahh yes flying....you fly for miles and go nowhere!

do you have to pay a lot to participate? i know it's free to join but i think you have to pay for transport, buy clothes etc.
