Itunes.....can you import DVDs into your Itunes library, for playing on Ipod Classic?

As the Ipods can have movies and TV shows downloaded on to them, I had assumed that I could load all my DVD's into Itunes and transfer to ipod.

I can't do it and I have searched on the help option and on the website, but no answers! Anyone know whether this is possible?
