My pc died in June so I bought a laptop. I phoned AOL and asked them about going wireless and they told me to buy this certain router which I did. I connected it up and have been merrily connecting to the internet via internet explorer ever since.

I've since decided that I should really get round to installing the AOL software onto the laptop so phoned today to check what to do and was told just to download it from the aol page. So duly done that but now it won't connect

I keep getting a message saying that the computer could not get an internet connection.

Does anyone know why it says this? It tells me to go to internet explorer and try to get online that way which I can do perfectly well but it won't connect my AOL.

Any ideas? Anyone had this happen?

dont know but call aol assistance and they will sort it out for you, did for me.

Try it again. I vaguely remember having to do it more than once- why, I don't know. I wiped it from the computer and started again. HTH. Also, AOL seems to prefer it if the router is switched on first, before you switch on the computer. If you switch on the computer and have forgotten to switch on the routerm, but try to get into AOL it will be funny, and you often have to restart.

My God, I sound vaguely knowledgable in the Geek section.

The router is on and connected though this is what I don't understand, we've been using the router since we got it and installed it and it has worked fine with internet explorer I'm only just getting round to installing AOL software on the laptop.

Since I last posted I have phoned AOL and the lady ran through all the checks and changed a few things and when it still didn't work, was getting an error message, she asked me if I had put the new filters that came with router in the phone socket or did I leave the old ones on? I told her I was pretty sure I'd put the new one on but couldn't check right at this moment as the phone socket is behind a wardrobe in dd's bedroom. There is no filter in the router box so I must have put it on but basically she told me to check and then phone back and thinks that I must have left the old filter on and it's now not working!

I was getting slightly annoyed though because she kept saying "ah you are not connected to the internet because of this", but I was connected to the internet as I was looking at the Internet explorer home page and the little internet icon is showing as connected on my taskbar.

I don't really understand how all this technology works. and at the risk of looking really stupid I'll ask this question, but I'm guessing it doesn't need to be dialling a phone number anymore like the old modem did?

I'm on aol and wireless - what router do you have?

TLESinChristmasStockings · 09/12/2008 00:37

go on internet explorer and typing in the following

192.168.0.1

when the pop up comes up type in ADMIN
and for the password

PASSWORD

this will hopefully take you to a page where you can check the status of your modem. I do this often to check it is all working ok

Hello again, thanks everyone

It's a Netgear DG834GT router which is the one that AOL told me to buy as it works with their software, ha!

And when I go to the router page it tells me that the modem is connected.

I'm going to phone AOl again tonight once the dd's are in bed and see what they say tonight.
