I need urgent help choosing a Digital SLR camera

I feel ready to enter the world of digital SLR photography but i have no idea how to choose which camera suits my needs the best. Or should i say our needs as it is for both myself and my partner. I am keen on taking close up arty shots of my children, general recording of my family's life and landscapes (i have an art degree and this is my main means of chanelling my creative streak at the moment!). My df on the otherhand needs a camera which can take decent photo's of his work (he's a Joiner) for advertising/portfolio purposes. He mainly needs to take photo's of windows, doors, houses and staircases. The digital camera we have at the moment tends to have a habit of warping at the edge of the photo, a nightmare when you need frames, houses etc to be perfectly straight..

Can anyone suggest a DSLR that is good for two enthusiastic beginners, we're looking to spend up to about £300.

Hopefully someone can help as i am lost in a sea of camera reviews at the mo... and i desperately want a new camera in time for christmas as it will be our son's first

dp, who is a bit into photography, got us the Nikon D40x.
it's great because he can fanny about with it and make it do all kinds of clever stuff, but it also has a brilliant "auto" mode that I can use and still get decent pics.

We just bought a cannon EOS for £337 from Jessops. The ticket price was £329.99, then the 2.5 VAT reduction was taken off. I got a £10 voucher off, I did need to then buy a memory card but in the end I got the whole thing for £337, but I do need to write into Cannon to get my £30 cashback.

Hope that helps

I LOVE my Canon! The Auto setting is fine for most pictures, and the shutter speed is as quick as 35mm
