I think this is a Cookie error. The server you are trying to access is trying to set a cookie, and can't for some reason. It cannot proceed without setting that cookie, so keeps retrying until the error is produced at which point the browser stops communicating.

Questions:
What was being attempted when this error was produced?
What browser is being used?
Is the ISP AOL? I think AOL cookie issues are now a thing of the past, though if the browser is AOL branded, then try using a different browser.

AVG - I find that I need to update manually, from within the application. I have the free edition, so different update files, possibly coming from a different server(s). Paid for version of AVG does give some benefits over the free version - Anti-Rootkit, Instant Message protection, Real-time webpage protection are just some benefits.

It is paid for AVG
It is when you try to access the AVG site

You get free support with paid for AVG, so e-mail support and see if they can suggest something. Not having the paid for edition, I can't help.
I don't have trouble accessing the AVG website itself. If you can access it, there has been an issue with an update file recently - there is a utility to download which will remove the update, so a new update can be done. See Support - Invalid Update Control CTF file
