Our computer is dying so we need to get a new one soon. At the moment any computers on special offer have windows vista included. Now we have xp home. Do any of you have any pros or cons to inform me about before we set off to the shops?

DO NOT GET VISTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the program of death!!!!!! Get a Mac instead.

Oh god I hate vista with a passion. It's also a nightmare to open anything that you ever did on XP with vista.
Stay Xp or yes, get a mac!!

My laptop has died , this computer is groaning along ,I so want a mac , so bloody expensive though.
I have heard vista is rubbish too, clogging up things or summat?

I prefer XP too but can't say we've had a problem opening XP files on Vista. We have both and Vista is very easy to use but its a PITA as so much stuff is still not fully compatible. Most new computers seem to come with Vista now though.

A joke, but sums it up really

Some places will put XP on if you ask for it.

vista is hell xp much better dh says widows 7 will be good but out next year

Thanks everyone, maybe vista is bad and that's why all the special offer cheapo computers have it over here (in Germany) but if it's that bad I'd rather pay a couple of hundred more and have xp.

....as a Mac anorak of some years standing, I plainly would plump for OSX as your best choice.

It is expensive, though.

...I have installed Windoze as an option on two of my Macs, Vista on one, and XP on another.

Vista is slow, takes up an enormous amount of space, and doesn't seem to have much to recommend it.

XP is quite usable, though. It's quite swift (on a machine with a decent processor) and is quite simple to use. Not as simple as Mac OSX, but a shedload cheaper.

...the other option, cheaper still, is a Linux system. I think I would have any of the above rather than Vesta (or whatever it is called)

I have no problems with Vista. Compared with teh problems I am currently having with XP it is great. The only thing to watch for is that you choose a PC with enough RAM. You need 1Gb absolute minimum. 2Gb will run better then you will be fine.

You will either struggle to get an XP machine now. Or you will pay a premium for it.

I didn't think you could get XP on any new machine now...and Windows will stop supporting it at some point in the future.

I would say stay away from vista too.... but you will NOT be able to buy a new PC without it I'm afraid.
DH had to fight tooth and nail to get dell to ship without vista, and that was 12 months ago almost.
When my laptop died a few months ago.... I replaced it with a macbook.
I had been using a laptop with vista as a stop gap, and it was a nightmare- constantly crashing, freezing for no reason, restarting for no discernible reason etc.
Try to avoid it.
