Digital camera memory card question

My new camera has arrived and is charging. I'm pleased with it so far but obviously haven't used it yet.

So it's only now, reading the manual, that I realise I haven't got a memory card for it It takes xD-picture cards, SD cards and SDHC cards. Which do I want? And are all memory card brands much the same ie will any (say) 2GB card be ok?

Also as I want to use it at the weekend and will be working between now and then can I use the card from our old camera in the meantime? I don't want to use it permanently as it's capacity is pants (no idea what and can't find camera now to look) it seems to have got worse over the years we've had it, is that likely?

I don't know much about the memory cards but 2gb will be plenty. I made the mistake of getting 4gb (on special offer) and can now take 1000 photos on my camera lol.

How many MP is your camera? Mine is 10 and each photo on the highest quality is between 2mb and 5mb in size. I regularly download them from the card and have yet to fill a 2GB card, even on holiday

I've had no problems with San Disk or Fuji brands and a friend says Kingston are fine too.

Is SD what I want then? Is that like a "standard/normal" memory card?

I've just learnt that SDHC is the same as SD, just SDHighCapacity. So definitely SD then.

If your new camera is 8mp or more or if you are planning to take many videos, I would consider a bigger card or a SDHC.

I also think it is useful to have two cards, so if one is full and you haven't had time to download the pictures for example on holiday, then you still have some spare memory.

sd cards are so cheap online, do not buy from a shop as theyre rip off prices!

you can buy a 2gb for £3.45 from MX2, i ordered 2 last friday and they arrived yesterday, free delivery aswell.

standard 2gb card (kingston) from memorycardzoo is only £4.45, or £7.10 for a 4gb one. Seems cheap enough to go for the 4gb. Not got to delivery costs if I want it in less than 5 days though.

damn got to stop, children requiring seperating and then lunch. Will return to my purchase later after consideration.
