What does it mean when your computer makes a noise like a door opening, or a door closing?

My laptop is doing this from time to time and I don't know what it means? Can anyone tell me?

AOL messenger makes that noise when one of your contacts signs in or out

Agree, it's aol buddy list. Does it also say "You've got company" That is very spooky when you've forgotten that it is still on.

I had that with a mesenger thing it automaticly logged on and I didn't realise, someone on my email list had whatever email account you need to link up and everytime they logged on it made that noise.

Could be the fan unit,easy to replace.Not expensive part.If one of your friends or their children is a comp geek they would be able to do it easily.
