URGENT HELP - my Macbook has just blown up!

OMG DH is going to freak. I am freaking

I was on MN, all normal, and then there was this fizzle/tzzzzz sound with a pop, at the power supply entry to the mac and the Mac went off, then the power supply went off, and there was sn intense smell of electricity/sulphur type smell. Which is still here.

And noth units are dead.

What has just happened? Its not looking good is it?

It is less than a year old. Second power supply as the last one died, but not like this.

Don't freak, it's not your fault! That is definitely not on. Are you near an Apple Store? If so take it in and demand some action. If it's less than a year old it's still covered by the warranty and if it's blown up you need a replacement. Otherwise phone Apple and bend their ear till they sort it. Explosions are not good. Are you ok?

Yes I am fine thank you for asking Nothing serious, but the smell is soooooo disgusting, I am surprised there was nothing more than a fizzle/pop first.

I just looked at the Mac to get serial number...and it STINKS still. And it had been charging for 20 mins so should be able to at least turn on, but not a sausage, and nothing from the power supply either, which stinks too.

I have been racking my brains in case it might have been our fault somehow, but can't see how. It has not been used for several days, in a protective case out of DDs reach and worked fine last time it was used .

Mac will definitely fix/replace it if it's under a year old.

MacBooks seem to have a lot more problems than the PowerBooks. Take it to the place you bought it and demand they sort it out.

Tech support is not open today .
We might have to take a drive up there, it is not local but DH will want it sorted asap.

Could it be something we have done though?

Apparantly we have to pay £35 'Per Incident Report' if it out of its 'Complimentary' support period of 90 days! .

I remember something about this when the power supply stopped working, but it was within the 90 days. I just recall 90 days being mentioned.

No, you couldn't have done anything to cause it. It's a major fault and IMO they should replace it.

When you go there don't say anything 'oooh uuum, maybe I did something wrong, I don't know', make it clear that it happened for no reason and out of the blue. Tell them you are shocked about the decline in the quality of Macs recently and that you know of several people who have had hardware problems with MacBooks. Maybe you don't, but I do, so we can share!

DeJaVous - I shall be strong in my resolution, I can get quite uppity when I want to! I think we will go today, hopefully they are open.

Should I phone them first, so they can expect an irate tired mother, and prepare my new lap-top in advance?!! Or just pitch up with no warning? I often prefer the no warning, especially if it is busy in there, and I refuse to go to a quiet area, and remind them the power supply has already broken once....that should do it right?!!

I cost us a fortune so they better repair it.

Will they be able to get all the photo's off the hardrive? I have all the wedding photos, our trip to USA to see family, all our birthdays and holiday this week . I would be devestated if we lost it all .

DH is up, just told him, we will go up there today.

He just told me we had remote storage facility, wish I had known that, as I would have stored all the photos on it.

DH might want to go in actually, but I think I might be better at it, just because I can have the power of female tears in the middle of the shop when I tell them how devestated it was/how frigthening it was with DD next to me/how inconvenient it is/how much faith we put in them etc etc. Oh I am liking this.

We are having a cuppa and then heading off. It will take an hour to get there.

And the room and the computer STILL stink.

I think there is a good chance that the photos will be fine. Try not to worry too much it'll get sorted.

90 day complimentary period my arse! Your computer blew up. Don't take any nonsense. Are you going to an Apple Store? Any other shop will probably just send you back to Apple. They should be able to rescue your files anyway.

Took it in, told the first bloke we saw that it had blown up and he looked like he was going to pass out with shock! He booked us in for an 'appointment' 1 hour late (enough to time for us to get wagamma's for lunch .

Then the tech bloke who looked at it took one smell of it and said immediately that it had 'blown capacity' and it was serious! No question over fault, so I guess it must be something they have seen before.

He said he cannot guarantee the files, as it depends how far the blow-out reached or something, how much got fried basically. He said it should just be contained in the motherboard and something else, and if so, files are fine. If it has gone as far as some other important thing, then, its really bad and completely unsavable.

They have taken it away to the Apple Dr.

There was a very small crack in the front plastic which occured over the last few weeks, nothing to do with the blowing up of it, and they said there has also been issues with the plastics on some macbooks so they are going to replace keyboard outer casing etc,basically only thing the same is likely the hard-drive!
So, great they are repairing it,lets hope they save my files

Do you think I can claim expenses?

I would not mind if it was just the petrol. But...we also had to get wagammas as it was lunch time, Costa coffee for the journey home, and I had to go into Debenhams while DH was in the Apple shop getting it looked at, and as Clinique had Bonus Time I had to buy some more make-up.

These are ALL expenses that would not have occured if i had not gone to Exeter, which I would not have done if the Macbook had not broken .
