I would like to get dp sky HD for xmas. He is gadget mad, this is the only thing left to get him.

I have spoken to sky, £75 for the box and £30 installation. Now I grudge payin the installation in the first place (am a telecoms eng by trade), as I know the will cone, plug in the box and then contact HQ to get the card activated - which I could do myself. The main problem is that I would actually like to wrap the box up and give it to him on xmas morning, but Sky have advised that this wouldnt be possible - due to the "engineer" having to come and "install" it.

Does anyone know a way round this? Have sky+ at the moment.

Hi geordie - only vaguely helpful...but we got our HD box from our media suppliers. They were installing a whole load of things and they did the box, not Sky. As you say - they plugged it in, then rang Sky. So maybe you could buy the box from an electrical/media store? The shop we use is called Pounds and it's in Winchmore Hill North London.

It may depend if you already have Sky+. We didn't, and when we went from Sky to Sky HD they had to install a second widget in the satellite dish and run a second cable into the house, because the Sky+ part (ordinary or HD) needs a second feed to let you watch one thing and record something else.
