Suddenly the little battery icon has just a little cross in it?

It seems to have lost the ability to charge suddenly

the little lights on the bottom of the mac are not lit.....

is it doom and gloom?

It is doom and gloom, I'm afraid. Mine has the same, and this is the second battery this has happened to. I don't know if it is a fault with Macs (mine is an OS X Powerbook)...but suspiciously it happened when I started charging my iPhone on it.

First thing to do is to pop the battery out and clean the contacts, both on the battery and in the battery compartment. You can use a clean pencil eraser. Then put the battery back in and try to charge it for half an hour or so.

What model is it? There are some things you can do to reset the charging system depending on the model.

NotAnOtter · 08/10/2008 20:31

thankyou both

have tried cleaning it to no avail

MacBooks are notorious for battery probs

check your model on the Apple site in case you are eligible for a free replacement

I have one of the early ones that has a shite battery AND and tendency to overheat and blow up (still love it)

giddykipper · 08/10/2008 20:33

I'm having all sort of battery issues with my Macbook Pro, it has no life, dies as soon as the power lead is taken out. Took it to Apple Store who told me to 'recalibrate the battery' (which basically meant run it down and leave it for a while) - it didn't help.

FabioHasNineAndAHalfLives · 08/10/2008 20:39

the power lead on mine blew up as well

giddykipper · 08/10/2008 20:40

Thanks Fabio, Apple have a download here that they reckon is a fix. Will try now.

FabioHasNineAndAHalfLives · 08/10/2008 20:42

at least they go wrong in new and interesting ways

NotAnOtter · 08/10/2008 20:58

thanks- have tried the download

not sure what it did but think nothing!

they do this eventually I'm afraid.....
Time to buy a new battey.

singleWhiteMale · 08/10/2008 21:53

You could try resetting the power management:

support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

If that doesn't work, sounds like a trip to the apple store.

NotAnOtter · 08/10/2008 22:57

thanks swm

I had a battery disaster like this and they replaced it for nothing, via my nearest Mac shop - was not too much hassle.

I have also had two other disasters with the same Macbook btw. Hard disk meltdown and some problem with the fan. Make sure you have a complete disk backup system of some kind, such as a second hard disk in an external drive that you copy everything onto.

I still love mine as well

EffiePerine · 08/10/2008 23:02

yes the fnas can be a problem

but they are purty

NotAnOtter · 08/10/2008 23:08
