I've got one of those printers with a trapezium shaped thingie with lots of pins inside it and a computer with a hole shaped like a small version. any ideas, or do I need to be more specific?

does your computer have USB connectors too? it should do unless it is ancient, often you can get converters to change the 16 pin connector to a usb type.

called something like USB to serial or port connector and looks something like www.lindy.co.uk/usb-to-parallel-converter-lite-36-way-centronics-15m/42864.html

Misi, a USB to serial converter is an entirely different thing. Your link shows the right thing though.
