Security for my new laptop - Luddite needs your help!

We bought our shiny new laptop today.
As i am the least technophobic, I have been charged with setting it up and have no idea what interweb type security I should instal. Can anyone help?
Btw, it has free Norton for 60 days. No idea what to do.

I have finally got it up and running and have installed free agv fron cnet. Just wondered if htat was enough?

Bumping as I'm interested to hear answers on this...I've just chucked Norton out of the window and people keep saying just use a free one....but which one???
