Mac geeks, help me out PLEASE

my mac keeps making little bong sounds as tho it is receiving messages or something, but i cant figure out what they are. computers are not my strong point. pls help.
(its just done it twice more during typing this msg)

Could be many things - try going to the apple in the top left -- going down to force quit and see if anything is running you don't know about (like updater) that can bong.

thanks. closed 'my day' which might have been it i imagine. not that i use the thing...
