Anyone got an ASUS eeepc 901? Any good?

I am thinking of getting an ASUS eeepc 901. Will it run MS office - or at least powerpoint successfully?
How quickly does is boot?
How easily would it connect to a smartboard/digital projector?

[I'm sure the Linux version boots faster - but a lot of the powerpoint slides I would want to use have flash embedded in them, and would not run properly (or so I am told)]

I do however run a linux pc, and have no problem using flash...

AS I understand it, its the programme that would run the powerpoint slides with the embedded flash that would not work rather than linux itself

I have a (Linux) eee 900 - I am using it right now while my DW hogs the office PC.

It boots in a few seconds and shuts down almost instantly. It has no problems connecting over WiFi, or works brilliantly with a 3G card.

Being Linux, it won't run M$ Office, but it does come with Open Office which runs powerpoint presentations. I haven't tried it with embedded flash though. Yet...

No, Impress (the OpenOffice presentation app) cannot display swf (Flash) files .

Personally if I was going for a Window$ portable machine I would not go for something with so little power as an eee. PC world are doing a 12" Advent for £350 (Core 2 Duo, 2GB etc.) - is that portable enough?

Oh forgot to answer your other question - it has a standard (non-HDMI) monitor connection, so it should connect OK to most projectors but the 900 will only display up to 1024x768 - the 901 might be more so check the specs.

But with 4 computers in the house already (including a 12 inch Powerbook), can't see DH being overly thrilled with me buying another one just because it's "cute" and comes in pink...

I want a eee. My friend's v geeky DH has one and loves it and I've noticed them turning up in the sixth form at school.

What I really like about them is that they are more robust than most of the other laptops, the screens of which often feel flimsy IMO.

eee is more like my old Vaio C1XD which I loved and fitted easily into a small backpack style handbag.

Thanks for your answers - I am looking for something cheap and portable which boots fast, and can run Windoze software, especially powerpoint. The lenovo thinkpad looks ideal - apart from the price!
The eee 901 looks like a possibility, but I am a little concerned with how low powered it is.....

If you want cheap, then buying a machine that doesn't mandate having either Windows or Office will be considerably cheaper. I hear good things of the eeepc for general day to day use. No need to buy Microsoft Office when you can get very similar functionality from either OpenOffice or Symphony as well as the ability to open, edit and save files in Powerpoint, Word, Excel format.

I have one, didn't like it at first as I find the keyboard v small but it's grown on me. Only use it for mumsnet and googling so can't answer your questions.

Dell are doing their own version of the eee now, I was drooling over considering it the other day.

Cosette, read the thread. OP wants to run presentations with embedded Flash, and OpenOffice doesn't do that.

WWW - I still hate the keyboard on mine - I only use it when I have to. I think the new Acers are nicer.
