How do I get the volume to work on my pc?

Does anyone know how to turn the volume on, on my pc?
I have clicked the 'speaker' icon on the 'my computer' tab thing, and have turned it all up to max, but there is not a sound...

Help and thanks!

Try going to Control Panel and checking the device settings.

In XP: Start, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices
Click the Audio tab, check that the Default Device is set to something suitable. What exactly will vary depending on your system.

I have known new Acer laptops to be configured to default to the Digital Output for some reason, rather than the internal speakers.

Hmm - have done that check and all seems to be ok - except I know it isn't as there is no sound at all!

Any other suggestions?

Has it ever worked?
Please describe the speakers - are they attached via a cable for example? Is that plugged in the right hole (a child may have plugged it in somewhere else).

Ok, you are going to think I am incredibly stupid now (which of course I am when it comes to pcs!!)

Anyway, it's a laptop, and I have sorted it -
it had a volume control on the right side and I just turned it up as I think my little one must have turned it down, and I had never touched it before so I didn't know that's what it was!

Anyway - long story, but thanks nannynick for your help - will remember you for mext time!!

The physical volume control would do that... not always though - some just control software!
Good to hear you have it fixed.
