Why when I double click on the icons on the desk top they wont open and I have to right click and then click open,this has only happend in the last few day's and its driving me nuts.

are using windows xp?
Try this:
Go to Control Panel > Mouse
Open the Mouse properties (double clicking or right-clicking > Properties)
Look for a dialog where you can select the actions for the buttons, and set the left button to be the primary. You can also set the speed for the double-click.
You should have a little folder where you can test the new settings.
It may give you an option to restore the default settings.
I cannot think of anything else...
